Advisor Highlight - Ruth in the News!

Be sure to check out the Panhellenic Newsletter!  Here's a spotlight on our very own Advisory Board Chairman Ruth Miller from the newsletter!

Ruth Killion Miller is the Kappa Alpha Theta Advisory Board Chairman, and has been an extraordinary role model for Theta as well as members of the Greek community. Raised in Waco, this ambitious, blonde bombshell was a Cotton Palace Queen and Baylor grad that played a key role in bringing Panhellenic sororities to Baylor, and helped establish Theta as the first national sorority on Baylor’s campus in 1976. She is the President and owner of the 105 year-old company Percy Medicine and has two grown sons with her husband. She enjoys the outdoors and watching sports and also loves to read, quilt, and cook.

Ruth has held many positions within Theta throughout her college and alumnae experience and served as the social chair and recruitment chair in school and as the College District President for four years, the Advisory Board Chairman on two separate occasions, and the Education Advisor after graduation. About two years ago, our Baylor chapter experienced a great loss when our former Advisory Board Chairman Amy Mann passed away suddenly from health-related causes. It was hard for the members who loved her dearly, but Ruth graciously stepped in at a time of need with a desire to preserve her friend’s legacy as well as build a new foundation for growth in the chapter – and Ruth has done just that! She is a constant source of knowledge and support and is 100% dedicated to helping push the chapter forward in every aspect. She is a kind and caring person, and will always go the extra mile with everything she does. Miller states, “We always say Theta is for a lifetime, and I love working with the chapter because I enjoy having the opportunity to encourage and give back to the organization that has given so much to me.” The members of Theta love and respect Ruth and appreciate all of the hours she puts in to our chapter.

When talking about our beloved advisor, Callie Redding states, “Ruth is such an amazing inspiration to work with; she constantly pushes you to become a better woman and to remember the bigger picture. Her love for Theta is exceeded by one thing, her passion for the young women who become members of the Epsilon Epsilon chapter at Baylor University.”

Where is She Now??

Congratulations to PC '07 Theta Sarah Boehner! She is currently Miss Dallas 2010 and just placed in the top 15 out of over a 100 beautiful girls in the Miss Texas pageant!

She is working with charitable organizations throughout Dallas right now, and just started a program called "You Can Do It" where she goes into schools to teach students how to be successful (especially students with learning differences like Dyslexia.) She also just launched her resources website, http://www.youcandoitdyslexia.com/. It provides resources for children with learning differences, so they can read about about their learning disability as well as provides resources for the parents to learn how to help their children be more successful. She was also just Certified as a Wedding Planner and she's in the beginning stages of opening her own company in Event Planning!

Sarah says, "I miss so much about Theta, but what I miss the most is having the support system that it provided me and constantly being surrounded by my best friends and amazing woman. I would encourage every girl to get involved in the Theta Alumni chapter in their area, because it keeps them connects in Theta and can really open doors for them as well as meet some amazing women."

We all love and miss you Sarah!!! Congratulations again, and best of luck with Wedding Planning! You'll be great at it!

Theta Loves the Baylor Lariat

Wow!  Thanks Baylor Lariat for this awesome write up!  We love you too!

http://baylorlariat.wordpress.com/2010/09/15/weekly-greek-high-flying-ladies-of-kappa-alpha-theta/

Baylor Lariat:

"Why walk when you can fly? Represented by the colors black and gold and the symbols of a kite and twin stars, the Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta focuses on inspiring, facilitating and supporting it’s members ambitions.

1870 is an important year for all Theta’s. At Indiana Asbury College, now known as DePauw University, Kappa Alpha Theta was established as the first Greek-letter fraternity for women. Founder, Bettie Lock, intended for Theta to “exist to nurture each member throughout her college and alumnae experience, and to offer a lifelong opportunity for social, intellectual and moral growth as she meets the higher and broader demands of mature life.” The Epsilon Epsilon chapter continuously demonstrates Bettie Locke’s intentions.

Spiritually, Theta strives to uphold their moral code regarding the ideals of faith, hope and love daily with their actions. The girls also have a weekly bible study, and participate in many volunteer opportunities like Kings Club and Ballerina Dreams.

Thetas are actively involved in their community, especially in the lives of children. Theta's philanthropy is Court Appointed Social Advocates, generally known as CASA. This program helps children in the foster-care system find the sense of security they need to grow and develop. Children represented by CASA are more likely to find permanent homes. To support the cause, Theta annually hosts Theta Rocks the Casa. The ladies hire caterers and a band and raise money from t-shirt sales and donations. However, this year on Oct. 6th, between 5 and 7, Theta is mixing it up by hosting a carnival at Minglewood Bowl instead of the usual Theta Rocks the Casa. There will be multiple inflatables and bounce houses, food, music, games and more- proceeds will go towards CASA. Theta is actively involved in many other social, philanthropic, and sisterhood events as well. In fact, the organization has another exciting day planned on Sept 25: the chapter will host its annual a Take-a-Date at Six Flags!

But it isn’t all play and no work with the lovely Theta ladies. Last year the 2010 pledge class had the second highest GPA! One of the many ways the ladies continue to support academics and sisterly bonding is by hosting study halls throughout the day. The organization also makes goal sheets and has study support for difficult classes.

Theta had been, and continues to be a productive organization. Many influential women have reaped the benefits of Theta’s mission. Notable sisters include designer Tory Burch, former first lady Laura Bush and singers Sheryl Crow and Amy Grant."

Parent's Weekend Tailgate

Way to go Kara King for putting on an awesome Parent's Weekend Tailgate for all the Thetas and their families this past weekend!  We sure loved the Vitek's catering and the Baylor Victory!!  Sic 'Em Theta!
